Aspen Bottled Water Plans Halted

City Decides Not To Sell Aspen Water Nationwide

POSTED: 11:00 a.m. MDT June 6, 2002

The city of Aspen, Colo., has put the cork in plans to bottle and sell its water.

The city had planned to start bottling water this summer by shipping it to Las Vegas where it was to be purified and distributed nationwide under the Aspen name.

Aspen Mayor Helen Klanderud said there were a number of factors that influenced the city's change of heart, including the current statewide drought.

Klanderud said that she was skeptical of the bottled-water plan since it was announced in April.

"The drought was the final nail in the coffin," she said, adding "you'd have to be quite insane" to bottle water this summer.
