SALIDA, Colo. -- It’s time to make your New Year's resolution. Instead of trying to lose weight or quit smoking, a Salida company says Go Green and become more environmentally conscious. The way to do it they said is by converting your current car or SUV into a hybrid."Little Prius' are great, but people want their SUVs," said Pete Hansen with Salida Conversions.
Hansen said he can convert any rear-wheel drive automatic vehicle into a hybrid by installing an electric motor to the drive shaft."It is a real smart system," said Hansen. "It reads what is going on in the computer of the vehicle, it checks out your throttle position, what speed you are going and turns the motor on when it is the least fuel efficient."Salida Conversions installs a system called EMIS, Engine Motor Interface System. EMIS requires 48 Volts or 72 Volts of additional battery power.Hansen and his partner Mike Jones installed four, 12-volt batteries, wired in a series in the back of their Chevy Tahoe."As far as fuel efficiency," said Jones, "we went from 11 miles per gallon in the city...it is now averaging about 18 miles per gallon."Jones said the conversion can be done for around $7,000.
