POSTED: 7:33 am MST December 27, 2007
UPDATED: 9:07 pm MST December 27, 2007

A yard spotter at the Longmont Butterball plant was run over and killed by his own rig Wednesday night in Longmont.

Police said they responded to a call at about 9:47 p.m. to a report of a person stuck underneath a trailer in the 300 block of First Avenue.

Police found Manuel O. Vega, 44, of Greeley, Colo., dead at the location.

An investigation revealed the driver had exited his truck cab and was underneath the trailer when his truck rolled backward. The passenger side rear truck tires rolled over him.

Vega was pinned under the wheels of a tractor used to move trailers around the company yard.

"Everyone at Butterball, LLC is deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this difficult time," a statement from the company said.
