DENVER, Colo. -- The man in charge of Colorado's elections recommended using paper ballots at polling locations for the 2008 presidential elections.Secretary of State Mike Coffman said people are more confident in that system than in electronic voting; however, he said he is opposed to an all mail-in ballot election.Last week, Coffman decertified most of the state's electronic voting machines because of problems with security and accuracy.
As a result, many county clerks and recorders want the 2008 election to be all mail-in ballots."I don't feel comfortable with that solution because I think the voters of Colorado ought to have a choice in how they want to vote," said Coffman.Coffman said even in a mail-in election federal law requires one handicap accessible electronic machine at every drop-off location.Lawmakers will hear from all sides of the issue when they reconvene next month and decide how to conduct the election.Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, D-Denver, said he agrees with Coffman on using paper ballots, but that the mail-in election may prove to be the best way.“Since a vote-by-mail election is less reliant on questionable technology, the Legislature will consider mailed ballots as well as paper ballots at polling place. Regardless of the system the Legislature chooses, our goal is to conduct a secure, accurate election in which voters can have confidence,” said Gordon.
