Former Elizabeth Teacher Sentenced For Sex With Football Player

Darcie Esson Sentenced Last Week In Glenwood Springs

POSTED: 5:47 am MST December 18, 2007

A former Elizabeth High School teacher who admitted having sex with a high school football player while her own children slept nearby is spending 90 days in jail and then must serve 10 years to life of supervised sex-offender probation.

Darcie Esson, 33, was sentenced on Dec. 13 in Garfield County Court after pleading guilty in June to sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. In exchange for her guilty plea, two other charges were dropped.

The football player was 17 at the time and the two were on a school sports outing, staying in Glenwood Springs. The high school football team was staying there after playing Rifle High School in a playoff game.

Esson was accompanying the team on the trip, after having finalized her divorce the day before, police said.

The football player sneaked out of a hotel he and the team were staying in and went to Esson's room in a nearby hotel, according to police.

Police said Esson and the teen had sex on the floor of her Glenwood Springs hotel room while her 4-year-old and 8-year-old daughters and a 17-year-old baby sitter slept in the same room.

Esson's defense attorney said Esson was drunk at the time and that the sex was consensual.

District Attorney Martin Beeson asked for a prison sentence of two years to life and told the judge before sentencing that a more lenient sentence would send a message that "if you want to sexually assault a minor, come to Garfield County because you can get away with it."

The teenager's father said Esson called his son repeatedly after the allegations first surfaced and advised him to lie about their affair. He asked the judge for the strongest sentence possible.

The former teacher apologized for her actions, telling the court, "This crime I committed is indeed wrong and I understand and accept any punishment that is put upon me."

Judge Denise Lynch also sentenced Esson to random urine tests, substance abuse and alcohol treatment and a mental health evaluation.

Esson must also pay more than $17,000 in restitution and register as a sex offender.
