DENVER -- A suspect accused of shooting seven people last month in lower downtown Denver, killing one of them, has surrendered to law enforcement authorities in Mexico.Denver police had described 25-year-old Anthony Chavez as the primary suspect in the shootings that occurred early on Nov. 4.Chavez surrendered to U.S. marshals in Mexico City, Mexico, authorities said.
Authorities credit his capture to the cooperation between the Denver Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Fugitive Location and Apprehension Group (FLAG) Task Force. The group conducted a fugitive investigation into the whereabouts of Chavez and learned he had fled to Mexico.Chavez, through his attorney, coordinated his surrender to deputy U.S. marshals assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.Deputy U.S. marshals accompanied Chavez on a flight to Denver that arrived Monday afternoon and he was transferred to Denver police custody, where he is held for investigation of first-degree murder.Ted Padilla was killed in the shooting spree, and six others were hurt.Witnesses said a man fired several shots into a crowd as they gathered in front of the Hush nightclub at 15th and Market streets. The group was leaving the nightclub at the time.Witness Dale Sasse has said that earlier at the club, a group had made comments to Padilla about his jewelry, and the club's management kicked that group out.
