A man arrested in the death of a Fort Carson soldier is a former infantryman who served with him in Iraq.

Police said they arrested 24-year-old Louis Edward Bressler on Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Spc. Kevin R. Shields.

A newspaper carrier found the body of the 24-year-old Shields on a sidewalk early Saturday. Police said he had been shot several times.

Tira Bressler said her husband is innocent. She said he came home early from Iraq to be treated for post-traumatic disorder and isn't a violent person.

Investigators have not said what led them to arrest the 24-year-old Bressler or what the motive may have been for Shields' slaying.

Police said they obtained a warrant for Bressler's arrest Wednesday afternoon and took him into custody as he drove into a gas station

Shields was a native of Roscoe, Ill.

He was a member of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division based at Fort Carson.
