Fire Scorches 1,500 Acres Near Lamar

3 Structures, Semi Truck Lost

POSTED: 7:52 pm MST December 1, 2007

A fast moving grass fire charred around 1,500 acres of land in south eastern Colorado Saturday, according to the Bent County Sheriff.

The fire started around 1:30 P.M. and was considered fully contained about 5 hours later.

Bent County Sheriff Gerry Oyen tells 7NEWS the fire, about 25 miles west of Lamar, was likely started by people burning trash. High winds fanned and spread the flames - at one point jumping over Highway 50.

Oyen says three abandon mobile homes and a semi truck were destroyed in the blaze. No one was injured.

Various fire agencies from Bent, Kiowa and Prowers Counties assisted in the effort.

Crews plan to stay on scene overnight watching for hot spots.
