Autopsy: Shot To Head Killed Girl Caught In Crossfire

Police Look For Two Suspects, Question Family Members

POSTED: 10:00 am MST November 28, 2007

An autopsy has determined that a 10-year-old girl who died after being caught in the crossfire of a gun battle in her southwest Denver apartment died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The Denver Medical Examiner released the results Wednesday morning, after Auralia Cisneros was shot and killed late Monday at 4711 W. Tennessee Avenue, Apt. D. It labeled the death as a homicide.

"We determined that there was an exchange, we believe, an exchange of gunfire between occupants inside the residence and (the) suspect," said Detective John White.

He later said two gunman fled after the shooting and said the shooting is possibly gang- or drug-related.

"We need some anonymous tips," Police Chief Gerry Whitman said Tuesday. "I think that's what's going to crack this."

He spoke to the Rocky Mountain News about the case.

Whitman told the newspaper that so many shots were exchanged inside the apartment that investigators still have not determined whether the fatal shots came from the two suspects outside the house or from the occupants inside the ground-floor apartment, firing back.

Whitman said that criminal charges could be filed against members of the girl's family as a result of the gun battle.

No charges had been filed by mid-day Wednesday.

One of the suspects in the shooting was described by police as a Hispanic man in his early 20s, 5 feet, 4 inches to 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 140 to 150 pounds, with a beard and possibly a goatee. He was wearing a brown or black hat when last seen.

A description of the second suspect hasn't been released.

"We're asking that anyone who saw a suspicious vehicle last night, or heard anything unusual, that they contact police through Crimestoppers," said White.

The Crimestoppers telephone number is 720-913-7867.
