DENVER, Colo. -- A stolen pickup truck crashed into an apartment complex, coming within inches of hitting the family inside.Aurora police said the truck was first spotted just east of the Denver/Aurora city limits around 10:30 a.m. Police identified the vehicle as being stolen and began a pursuit. The driver continued west on East Colfax Avenue and after a short pursuit, the officer stopped the pursuit, police said.
Police believe the pickup was driving on Yosemite Street and tried to turn onto East 13th Avenue, missed the turn, and spun out of control slamming into Idiris Muhina's ground floor apartment.Muhina said the truck missed his head by inches. He was sitting in the living room with eight other family members when the truck's front crashed into the north wall.Friend and translator, Rasulo, said it made an awful sound."Yeah he said it was pretty scary for all the residents here and he said particularly my family it was," said Rasulo. The family who managed to flee Somalia during the civil war said they now have another story of survival. They have been given other accommodations at Grace Apartments. There was no word on when their apartment will be ready to move back in.The 16-year-old driver of the vehicle and his passenger were taken to an Aurora hospital for treatment of minor injuries. When released, police said the driver will face second-degree motor vehicle theft charges as well as felony eluding.
