Boulder Police Looking For Identity Thief

85-Year-Old Victim Has Warning For Other Seniors

POSTED: 12:27 am MST November 15, 2007
UPDATED: 6:51 am MST November 15, 2007

The Boulder Police Department is trying to identify a man suspected of taking a wallet from an at-risk adult.

Clayton Orton, 85, said he was an unsuspecting victim as he walked out of the Boulder Medical Center following a routine check of his pacemaker.

"He followed me right out the door," Orton said, adding that he intially thought the man accidentally bumped into him. "I even said 'excuse me,' not knowing that I was being pickpocketed."

When he arrived home a short time later he realized his wallet had been taken from his hip pocket.

Orton now believes he was a perfect target.

"I'm slow and old," Orton told 7NEWS from his home Wednesday night.

Police said someone then used Orton's credit cards later that same day to purchase gift cards at two different locations. Two purchases totaling more than $1,000 were made at Walgreens, located at 1830 30th St., and one purchase of more than $3,000 was made at Home Depot, 1600 29th St. in Boulder.

"The suspect worked very quickly," said Det. Aimee LaClaire of the Boulder Police Department.

According to police, the suspect seen in surveillance video using the credit cards appears to be a black male, about 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall. Witnesses provided varying information about the suspects weight, but investigators believe he may be between 160 and 200 pounds. The suspect also appears to be left handed.

LaClaire said the suspect could likely face a stiffer penalty because Orton's age makes him an at-risk adult.

The incident was reported Aug. 9, but was made public by police on Wednesday.

Orton said he's been told Home Depot was able to place a stop on the gift cards purchased so they can not be used. Financially, Orton is only out $50 in cash he had in his wallet.

Also taken, Orton's social security card originally issued in 1938.

"And I carried that card through Europe and the South Pacific, and this guy steals it from me."

Law enforcement highly discourage anyone from carrying their social security card to preven ID theft.

Police said anyone with information about this man's identity should contact Detective Aimee LaClaire at 303-441-3384. Those with information regarding the identity of the suspect and who wish to remain anonymous should contact Boulder County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or 800-444-3776. Tips can also be submitted via the Crime Stoppers Web site at www.crimeshurt.com.

Those submitting tips that lead to the arrest and charges may eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 from Boulder County Crime Stoppers.
