Douglas County, National Forest Fire Bans Issued

Dry Conditions Prompt Action

UPDATED: 3:52 p.m. MDT May 14, 2002

More fire restrictions were issued Tuesday in Colorado, as a drought continued to leave fields and forests tinder dry.

The Douglas County sheriff enacted full fire restrictions for the county, which means no campfires, charcoal grills outside of developed residential areas and no fireworks.

The restrictions do not cover propane stoves, fireplaces within buildings, or wood-burning stoves within buildings.

The ban came the same day as the Pike and San Isabel national forests instituted fire bans, which included the Comanche and Cimarron national grasslands.

The ban prohibits campfires, charcoal grills, and coal or wood burning stoves on national forest property.

Smoking is also banned in both national forests, except in an enclosed vehicle or building.

Chainsaw use is limited to a 6-hour period from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., as part of the ban.

The Arapahoe national forest issued a fire ban last week.

After a dry winter, more than 443 wildfires have burned about 22,937 acres in Colorado this year, according to the Rocky Mountain Area Coordinating Center of the National Interagency Fire Center.
