Crashing Car Misses Sleeping Occupants By Inches
House 'Explosion' Turns Out To Be Car Crash
AURORA, Colo. -- A family of four escaped injury early Friday when a car crashed through the house, ending up on the back patio.
"I thought an airplane hit the house initially because there is no way a car could possibly hit our house where we live. I looked out the hole in our house and there is an SUV laying there," said homeowner Chris Giebler.
The Aurora Fire Department was called to the 11254 E. Colorado Dr. at 3:16 a.m. after residents of the house reported they were awakened by the crashing car.
Police said the black 2001 BMW broke through the master bedroom wall, just inches from the headboard of the bed. The sport utility vehicle continued out the back of the house before stopping.
"Inches away. My wife's nightstand was annihilated and she was right next to it. So we are talking a foot away," said Giebler.
The 24-year-old driver of the SUV, Jonathan Webb, was trapped in the car with a fractured ankle. He was extricated and rushed to the Medical Center of Aurora. He is currently listed in good condition.
Police said the SUV's driver was speeding when he lost control, skidded though a open area adjacent to Ponderosa Elementary school, crashed though a fence, then through the brick wall of the house.
Investigators said it does appear that speed and/or alcohol may have been factors in this crash.
No charges have been filed at this time, pending toxicology reports.
