A house fire was reported around 9 a.m. Friday in the heavily wooded Sprucewood subdivision of Douglas County, southwest of Sedalia.
When the first fire units arrived the house was engulfed in flames and threatening to spread to the nearby forest, officials said. The house was located within the eastern boundary of the Pike National Forest.
Firefighters from three different fire departments responded to the A-frame home, located at 938 S. Highway 67. Due to the close proximity of Forest Service property, an air tanker was used briefly.
Fire crews were able to keep the house fire from spreading to the nearby trees.
The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and an investigation was under way to determine how the blaze started.
Smoke from the fire drifted west over Jefferson County prompting a number of 911 calls from worried residents.
