Officer Left Doors Unlocked While Chasing Suspect

Littleton Police are looking for a carjacker who lead officers on a chase, then stole a police squad car.

Police say the man carjacked an elderly woman in broad daylight Sunday afternoon.

They say he was wearing a ski mask when he approached the woman in the 1st Bank Parking Lot, 101 W. County Line Rd., and told her to get out of her car.

Minutes later, an officer saw the stolen car driving by and gave chase.

The carjacker lost control of the car and crashed in front of a neighborhood at W. Mineral Ave. and Polo Ridge Drive.

Police say when he took off running, the officer chased after him, but somehow the man managed to go back to the crash location and try to carjack two other people.

He was unsuccessful, but he then saw the police car, which was still running with the doors unlocked, and he took off in it.

Police found the squad car about 2 miles away in the 7900 Blk. Of S. Bemis St.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5’8”, 25-30 years old, with a stocky build, mustache, wearing a black t-shirt, dark pants and white tennis shoes.

Arapahoe County Sheriff deputies and K-9 responded to assist Littleton Police with tracking the suspect. The K-9 located the suspect’s clothing including his ski mask but could not locate the suspect.

Sgt. Sean Dugan, a spokesman with Littleton Police said it is policy to secure police cars, but there are exceptions.

"The risk to the public is greater, and it’s more important for us to apprehend the suspect than to concern ourselves with whether or not we locked our doors when we got out,” said Dugan. “Like I said, that’s extremely rare that a suspect would chance coming back to where a police car is, especially when there are more police cars flooding the area.”

Littleton Police encourage anyone with information related to this crime to call the Littleton Police Department at 303-794-1551 or their local law enforcement agency.
