Home 'Winner' Says Winning Home Taken Away

Whose House Is It Anyway?

A local woman said that newspaper ads called her the "winner"of anew home, but she was locked out, in just a few days.

Veronica Baca said it's still a shock to think the house she believed she'd won at Invesco Field isn't hers.

"It was so exciting, " Baca said.

On Oct. 21, before the Broncos played the Steelers, Centex Homes held the final part of a competition that had started in early August.

Baca had qualified as one of three finalists.

She walked onto the football field with a key in hand, toward a door and doorframe set up on the field.

Her key worked and the door opened, meaning she was the winner.

Fireworks were followed by hugs from Broncos cheerleaders, a trip to a corporate suite with Denver Newspaper Agency representatives and Centex Homes people congratulating her, feeding her and her husband the finest filet mignon.

She signed a document titled: "Centex House Party Grand Prize Release" that named her as the winner of the home at 458 Mount Cameron Court.

It was also signed by Nina Anderson, a Centex employee.

7NEWS spoke with Anderson briefly Thursday afternoon at the home builder's Tech Center headquarters and were directed to a spokesman in Dallas.

Baca had agreed in the release to be used in ads that ran in both the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post on Oct. 23.

"Congratulations, Veronica Melita Baca. Her Key Opened the Door," they read.

"This is the day that I won the house. This is the day that my key opened the door and the fireworks went out. This is a lucky day. A dream come true. And to see myself like this, it seems like now it's just a nightmare. And they have caused this to me. I don't deserve this," Baca said while looking at the Post ad.

She even toured the Brighton home with more than 2,200-square-feet, four bedrooms, 2½ baths, with several excited family members.

After living in their Lakewood home for 35 years, this was a magic moment for the couple.

What they didn't know was another door had opened at the stadium as well, providing a chance for someone else to win.

Another "key" ceremony was performed at Invesco Field.

Baca said the locksmith ruled that two keys were winners.

And contest organizers said the finalists would have to agree to a random drawing of names.

Baca's lawyer refused.

"We do not consent to a re-drawing of the contest, as my client won the contest according to the rules," said attorney Jamey Jameson.

On Tuesday she learned another Lakewood woman had been chosen for the house.

Baca said she and her husband have been Broncos season ticket holders for more than 40 years and she's not upset at them.

"You know, the Broncos, definitely not them," Baca said.

She claims lawyers for the DNA and Centex offered a $25,000 gift card to a furniture store, but she refused that offer and refuses to quit.

"No, I'm not. I'm a fighter. I'm a very strong person. And I am not going to give up because I was awarded that house. They declared me the winner and that still remains the same," Baca said.

The following is a statement From Centex Homes and the Denver Newspaper Agency:

We are disappointed if any of the finalists are not satisfied with the results of the contest.

A contract was never written for the house because the final results were in question. A malfunction occurred when the winner was to be selected at Invesco Field at Mile High during the pre-game for the Broncos game on Sunday, October 21.

Each finalist agreed in writing to a random drawing to resolve any questions about the outcome in the event of a malfunction.

The random drawing to determine the winner occurred on Tuesday, October 30. Paula Hankins of Lakewood won the house in the random drawing. The two other finalists were offered merchandise worth approximately $25,000 for their inconvenience by Centex Homes and Denver Newspaper Agency, the primary sponsors of the promotion.

Centex Homes and the Denver Newspaper Agency have tried to achieve the fairest possible outcome according to the rules established for the promotion. We appreciate the overwhelming enthusiasm the campaign generated and offer special thanks to all who participated to make the event successful.
