1 Dead, 5 Wounded In Adams County Shootings

Two Shootings Reported Overnight

UPDATED: 9:29 pm MDT November 1, 2007

A 16-year-old boy with aspirations to finish high school was killed in a drive-by shooting Halloween night in Adams County and investigators still don't know who killed him.

In a second shooting incident that occurred hours later, five young men were wounded at a Halloween party in nearby Federal Heights, about three miles away from the first shooting.

The first incident was reported when Adams County sheriff's deputies received a call of a shooting in the area of West 76th Avenue and Turner Drive at about 9:45 p.m., and found a mortally wounded 16-year-old boy near the street.

One minute Jose Aranda is walking home from the 7-Eleven store with a carton of eggs, and the next minute, he was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Friends said Aranda attended Ranum High School and was not a gang member. They gathered at the place where he was gunned down, clinging to each other for support.

"He had plans. He told his mom that he was going to finish school. That he was going to do it just for her -- for her to be proud," said the victim's friend, Kiara Arvizu, in between sobs.

Deputies are trying to locate a dark green pickup with tinted windows, possibly occupied by two people in connection with the shooting. The motive for the shooting is unclear.

"We have a 16-year-old child who is dead and we need to find out who did it," said Adams County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Candi Baker.

"We don't walk around at night, but still, it was Halloween. Is it not safe for children to walk the streets, to go trick-or-treating?" asked a friend, Ashley Ramirez.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff's office at 720-322-1313.

Shots Ring Out During Halloween Party At Mobile Home

About six hours later, five people were found shot inside and outside a mobile home in Federal Heights. Four were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, and the fifth was taken by private vehicle to St. Anthony North Hospital and was later flown by helicopter to St. Anthony Central.

Police said the two shootings are not related. The second shooting was the result of a Halloween party gone awry, investigators said.

Investigators there said the shooting at the Kimberly Hill Mobile Home Park took place at a party attended by 30 or 40 people.

A number of witnesses were being questioned by police early Thursday. They told police the homeowner had asked people to leave when one of the people who had attended got mad and pulled out a gun.

The witnesses said the homeowner pulled out his own gun and fired back. One person was hit in the hand and another shot in the leg. The injuries of the others were not disclosed.

Of the five people who were hit, three were treated and released and two remain at St. Anthony Central Hospital. One person is in stable condition and the other person is in critical condition.

All of the victims are believed to be between 20 and 30 years of age.

Neighbors heard the commotion.

"About a minute later, I heard what sounded like a car backfiring several times," said neighbor Elaine Bishop.

"It was scary. We thought the bullets would come into our mobile home," said another neighbor, who grabbed her two young sons and ducked.

Cpl. Frank Turek of the Federal Heights Police Department said there is a "history" of previous calls at the address.

Anyone who attended the party or anyone who might have additional information is asked to call the Federal Heights Police Department at 303-428-8833.
