Trucker Dies Removing Tire Chains On I-70

POSTED: 4:02 am MDT October 19, 2007

A truck driver from Los Angeles was killed Thursday after he was hit by a vehicle in East Vail while removing chains from his big rig after he drove over snowy Vail Pass.

Eduardo Gandarilla, 36, was hit once by a semitrailer and may have been hit by at least one other vehicle driving west on Interstate 70, Vail Police Cmdr. Susan Douglas told the Vail Daily News.

"There is a possibility he was hit multiple times," Douglas said.

The accident was reported at about 1 p.m.

Gandarilla died at Vail Valley Medical Center, authorities said. The cause of the crash and Gandarilla's death was under investigation, she said.

Another driver was hit and killed by an out-of-control SUV Jan. 7 as he took the chains off his truck at a designated chain station in Georgetown.
