Bear Attacks Aspen Woman In Kitchen

POSTED: 12:18 pm MDT October 17, 2007

An Aspen-area woman was attacked by a bear that had gotten into her kitchen early Wednesday.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife said the woman, who lives near the Aspen Valley Hospital, was awakened about 1:30 a.m. by a noise and went to her kitchen to investigate. She came face-to-face with the black bear and was struck in the face by the bear.

The woman, who was not identified, called for help and was taken to the hospital with cuts from the bear's claws. Her injuries were not life threatening.

Investigating wildlife officers said the bear gained entry to the condominium through a closed sliding glass door. The officers were attempting to capture the bear Wednesday by placing traps around the condo.

Wet weather conditions in the area made the use of tracking dogs impossible, according to the DOW.

If the bear is captured, it will be euthanized because of its aggressive behavior.

This is the second incident involving a bear in the Roaring Fork Valley in the past week. On Oct. 11, a resident of Old Snowmass was injured by a bear in his garage.

The DOW reminded residents to close and lock doors and eliminate bear attractants such as trash, birdfeeders, pet food, barbecue grills and fruit trees.

So far this year, the Colorado Division of Wildlife has relocated 24 nuisance bears from Pitkin County and wildlife managers have euthanized 12 bears for aggressive or dangerous behavior, most for breaking into homes looking for food.
