World Series Trip Means Fan Must Fulfill Marriage Promise

Rockies Win; Man Strikes Out On Bet With Girlfriend

If you're familiar with the movie "Fever Pitch" you know Jimmy Fallon's character is a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan.

In Littleton, there's a fan as passionate as the character. His team, of course, is the Rockies.

Jim Cruz can show you scorecards, neatly placed in binders, dating back to 1997. For the games, he brings the same purple backpack he's carried for 15 years.

"When I sit down and focus on the game I keep a scorecard. I keep everything in order. I don't even get up to go to the bathroom," said Cruz.

For over seven years and at least 50 games, his girlfriend Mimi Cafarchia sat by his side.

"There's a love of the game. There is passion. Then there is Jim," said Cafarchia.

Cruz said he loves Cafarchia but just wasn't in love with the idea of marriage. He'd been a single dad for many years and both had already been married.

So to keep talk of matrimony sidelined, Cruz came up with a bet he knew would bust.

"He said, 'OK, I'll make a bet with you. If the Rockies go to the finals, we will get married,'" said Cafarchia.

Rockies in the World Series? Cruz thought it was impossible.

"No way were the Rockies ever going to make it this far. In fact, seven weeks ago they were in last place. I was safe," said Cruz.

But in the fourth inning of Monday's game, a sweep was in sight and so was Cafarchia's elusive engagement.

"Thank you Matt and Todd and Yorvit because you guys did it for me," said Cafarchia.

Cruz, ready with a purple ring, got down on one knee and rolled the dice.

"He goes, 'They won.' And he said, 'I told you that I would give you this, and I kept your promise,'" said Cafarchia.

"If God's willing to place this miracle on the Rockies, I'm willing to marry my soul mate," said Cruz.

The pair plan to wed on Leap Day so, as Cruz puts it, he only has to celebrate their anniversary every four years.

Cafarchia doesn't care, though. She's just glad to clinch her man and the Rockies clinched the pennant.
