HENDERSON, Nev. -- The nationwide manhunt for Chester Arthur Stiles ended with a routine traffic stop. Stiles has been the focus of a nationwide manhunt since police identified him as the man who videotaped himself while raping a 3-year-old girl. The tape surfaced last month in the rural Nevada town of Pahrump. Police in Henderson, Nev., just outside Las Vegas, said Stiles was stopped Monday night for driving a car with no license plates. He also offered an expired California driver's license with a photo the arresting officer said looked "suspicious."
"He said, 'I'm Chester Stiles, the guy you're looking for,"' Henderson police Officer Mike Dye said. "He said, 'I'm tired of running.'" Investigators said Stiles was suspected of videotaping himself raping a 3-year-old girl. Officers have interviewed people with connections to Stiles, who is described as a knife-wielding survivalist who once vowed never to be taken alive. The girl, who is now 7, was located in Las Vegas, with her mother.During a news conference Monday night, Las Vegas police said they are holding Stiles on 21 different charges.Police said he is being booked with eight counts of lewdness with a minor, 12 counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault.Officers said he was unarmed at the time of his arrest but they would not confirm if there were weapons found in the vehicle. During his arrest, officers said Stiles told them "if you have sex with a toddler on tape, you have to run."The video came to light last month when a man claimed to have found it in the desert. The tape is believed to be about 4 years old.Authorities said the person who found the tape had the video for as long as five months and showed it to others before turning it in.
