DENVER -- A mother who told police she was Christ and her three children were the anti-Christ has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in their attempted murders. Brenda Hernandez, 25, was found legally insane by a Denver judge when she tried drowning her then 2-, 3- and 7-year-old children in a bathtub, district attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said Monday. District Judge Anne Marie Mansfield ordered Hernandez, who had been charged with three counts of atempted first-degree murder, committed to the state mental hospital for an indefinite period, Kimbrough said.
All three children survived the Feb. 10 attack. Police said her 7-year-old son told investigators his mother wanted him to help drown his two younger sisters and to help her kill his aunt. Police believe the aunt, Elizabeth Rodriguez, may have interrupted Hernandez's alleged attempt to drown the children when she knocked on Hernandez's apartment door and then called 911.Police said when they knocked on the door of the apartment a woman's voice inside said, "No one's here. Go away."Hernandez was naked when she finally answered the door, police said. They found the two youngest girls in the bathtub.
