Oct. 7, 2007: Hero Takes Inner City Kids Mountain-Biking

For the most part, our fall weather has been spectacular in Colorado, prompting many of us to get up in the high country. But some people who live in Denver never get to the mountains.

This week's 7Everyday Hero, Andrew Goodwillie, makes sure inner city kids get to enjoy Colorado's great outdoors.

It seems like such a simple thing -- getting a kid outdoors -- especially in Colorado. But many of these kids have never been mountain biking before -- some have never left the city.

"We're Trips for Kids Denver and we work with groups of disadvantaged youth and take them on day-long mountain bike outings," said Andrew. "We had two little girls on a ride about a month ago and they had never been west of downtown Denver."

Andrew has volunteered with Trips For Kids Denver since 2001. He helped revive the nonprofit and gives his time several days a week.

"When they get off the bus you can see they carry problems physically -- you can see them on their face and then you get them onto a bicycle and that all sort of melts away and they have a chance to just be a kid for a day," said Andrew.

"It's really an awesome opportunity for them to see what life outside an urban setting is like," said Kelly Greengard of Wyatt Edison School. "We could never do this without them. There's no way. We couldn't afford the equipment or the training."
