UPDATED: 1:33 pm MDT September 20, 2007

A former Ault, Colo., high school teacher has been arrested after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student during the 2006 school year.

John Rogers Cochran, 41, of LaSalle, Colo., was arrested Tuesday by Weld County sheriff's deputies and taken to the county jail to await a Friday court appearance.

Cochran taught at Highland High School and was accused of the same charge in 1996, but the case was dismissed before it went to trial. Details of the latest case have not been made public.

Cochran has been placed on administrative leave by the University of Northern Colorado, where he had been teaching a senior-level course as an adjunct professor.

He was arrested for investigation of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. The alleged sexual assault involved "inappropriate contact" between Cochran and the 16-year-old girl, the sheriff's office said.
