AURORA, Colo. -- A bulldog that attacked a greyhound will have to be put down and the dog's owner must pay more than $3,000 for the fatal dog attack. On Sept. 7, the American bulldog attacked a greyhound that was walking with its owner in a South Aurora condo complex.Jake, the 11-year-old greyhound, ended up with more than 400 stitches and was put down within a week. Jake spent much of his life with his owner, helping staffers with Colorado Greyhound Adoption place the slender racing dogs with loving families.
"It was terribly frightening. She was out with both of her dogs. A neighbor rescued her other dog from the situation. But even now, she's afraid to go out to walk her other dog," said friend Jody Laughlin. The bulldog, a female named "Bonnie," was a Father's Day present for Michael Collins, who didn't think his new dog was part of Aurora's restricted breed ban."We weren't aware. We thought it was just pit bulls. But that's our fault," said Megan Collins, Michael's wife.On Wednesday Michael Collins pleaded guilty to three violations of the city's breed ban.He was ordered to pay $3,134.70 to Jake's owner, Kellie Condie, or face a 10-day jail sentence."It really hurts me that this had to happen on both parts. And like I said, I couldn't apologize more," Megan Collins said.Animal control officers said the number of restricted breeds brought to the shelter will likely be down by more than two-thirds by the end of 2007.Animal control officers also offer a breed assessment, conducted at the dog owner's home. If the animal passes the test, the owner gets a certificate proving the dog is legal. If it fails, the owner has 24 hours to get it out of the city. The breed assessment costs $25.
