Bailey Plans Memorial Service On School Shooting Anniversary

UPDATED: 10:27 am MDT September 17, 2007

Churches and businesses in Bailey plan a public memorial next week on the first anniversary of a high school school shooting that left a teenage girl and the gunman dead.

Platte Canyon School District officials said all their schools will be on a special schedule and will be closed to the public. They gave few details.

The public memorial will include a wall of remembrance and a candlelight ceremony.

On Sept. 27, 2006, Duane Morrison, 53, took seven girls hostage in a Platte Canyon High School classroom and sexually assaulted some of them before killing 16-year-old Emily Keyes as SWAT officers stormed in.

Morrison then killed himself with a gunshot to the head.

Keyes had text-messaged her family before she was killed to tell them that she loved them.
