Six Months Later: No Clues In Abandoned Baby Case

Cause Of Death Not Known, Coroner Says

POSTED: 9:20 a.m. MDT April 22, 2002

Police in Louisville, Colo., have received the final autopsy report on a newborn baby found in a cardboard box behind a local grocery store six months ago.

The Boulder County coroner ruled that the cause and manner of the infant's death was "undetermined."

The little girl's body was found Oct. 12 behind a Safeway on South Boulder Road. She had been wrapped in a bath towel and placed inside a shipping box for Coldwater Creek.

An extensive police investigation failed to identify the mother of the infant. The investigation is still open and police would like to hear from anyone who might have information about the case.

A Louisville woman, Leigh Ann Mitchell, helped organize the memorial service and burial for the infant. Mitchell said she often thinks about "Baby Mary Louise" and wonders how someone could abandon a baby like that.

Money for the burial was donated by Project Cuddle. Crist Mortuary of Boulder offered a casket and its services.
