It's been said that you feel music with your heart. That's certainly true for the students of Dorothy Chapman. Dorothy is a music instructor who assists music teachers at five different schools in the Jefferson County School District.

She's been putting in 40-hour weeks for 18 years and she's done it all for free.

"I don't think they could pay me enough money to make up for what I get out of this," Dorothy said.

Dorothy provides another gift which has more to do with life than music. She hopes her example of volunteering has taught kids to share their talents with others.

Her commitment has struck a chord with her students.

Eighth grader Sullivan Cox said, "She's really passionate about helping kids love the world of music."

For the years of donating her time to share lessons of music and life with her students, Dorothy received the 7Everyday Hero award from Denver's 7 and your local Subway sandwich restaurant.

In Dorothy's words, she hopes her students will carry with them "...an understanding that there is compassion in the world, where people can do for others and not expect something in return."
