Firefighters Hope To Contain Cedar Mountain Fire

10 Families Near Florissant Were Forced To Evacuate

A 130-acre wildfire in Teller County that destroyed a house and forced 10 families to flee was expected to be contained Wednesday.

Firefighters on Wednesday continued to build firelines around the fire and to widen existing lines.

Calmer winds and lower temperatures in the Pike National Forest west of Colorado Springs helped firefighters contain 25 percent of the fire, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Terry McCann.

The blaze was dubbed the "Cedar Mountain Fire" by the Forest Service. The blaze started on private property at about 1 p.m. Tuesday then jumped Cedar Mountain Road onto Pike National Forest land.

The cause of the fire is unknown. About 70 firefighters from 10 agencies responded.

Chuck Brock's house is believed to be the first house destroyed in a fire season brought on early by drought. A truck and several outbuildings next to the home were also destroyed. The home was located in the JDK subdivision.

The winds gusted to 50 mph during the day, preventing aircraft from being used to battle the blaze, but died down in the evening.

Evacuated residents were allowed to return home about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire, which is located approximately 5 miles northeast of Florissant,

This is the second wildfire of note to occur in Pike National Forest within the past two weeks -- an indication that the very dry conditions the area has experienced this winter portends a long and challenging fire season, officials said. Two weeks ago, the Platte Springs Fire north of Lake George consumed over 200 acres of National Forest, aided by strong winds, low humidity and warmer temperatures.

A fire danger map released by the Forest Service shows that fire risk in the southeast part of the state is very high. That danger zone also includes the areas just southwest of the Denver metro area. Click Here To See Colorado Fire Danger Map

Citizens are asked to use extreme caution when in the forest; fully extinguishing campfires to ensure they are fully doused and cool to the hand; ensuring cigarettes, matches, etc, are fully extinguished, having spark arrestors on mechanical equipment and vehicles; and quickly reporting any indications of fire.
