For the first time in the history of Colorado, a gay couple has adopted a child. In this case, the couple adopted two sisters. The women were able to do so because of a new law that allows same-sex couples, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles and other relatives, to jointly adopt children. The law took effect August 3rd, 2007. Colorado became the 10th state to allow gay couples to adopt.
"It is education, it is medical, it is health insurance," said Mary Ross, who just adopted two girls with her partner. "It is access to all the programs that the kids have available to them."Mary Ross and Jeannie DiClementi adopted Morgan and Evinn, sisters who were born to a drug addict and then deprived of food they said."14 lbs at 2 years of age," said DiClementi, talking about Morgan."There was a point when these kids did not have a future," said Ross. "They were going to die if we had not intervened."But those who fought against this law said gay adoption undermines the traditional family structure."The people that would have stopped this from happening and said this is not right for children; children need a mother and father," said DiClementi. "First of all they had a mother and father and those are the people that abused them, okay." "The second thing I would say is that the people who would block this from happening, how many children have they adopted that have special needs? How many foster children do they have?" "And would they will willing to take in a child with ... a disorder who bangs her head 12 times a day?"
