No Call List Battle Brewing

New Regulations Go Into Effect Soon

POSTED: 4:26 p.m. MDT April 12, 2002

A battle may be building over those annoying telemarketing phone calls we all seem to get.

Bill Clarke

Consumer champ Bill Clarke says the fight is over three little words.

The three little words are "Don't call me," says Clarke.

In one corner: Colorado's attorney general and the attorneys general from the 49 other states. In the other corner: the Federal Trade Commission.

Starting sometime next month, you should be able to officially sign onto the state's don't call list, Clarke says.

You'll be able to limit commercial telemarketing phone calls to your home or fax phone numbers.

Limit them starting in July.

But the Federal Trade Commission wants to establish a national "no call" rule of its own later this year. And that's making the issue a lot more troubled than it should be.

Colorado attorney general Ken Salazar says the federal regulations do not block calls made within the state. or telemarketing by phone companies, or by financial institutions.

Also, because the regulations come from Uncle Sam they could cancel out some of the state regulations.

There's some question whether the state will have the system in place in the next few weeks.

But we're told the list will be ready July first no matter what.

A private group has already gathered about 300,000 names of Colorado people who don't want those telemarketing calls.

But Clarke says each of those names will have to be verified before making the state list.
