DENVER -- Police chasing robbery suspects in Westminster ended their pursuit when the vehicle they were trailing crashed near Speer Boulevard and Auraria Parkway in Denver and the men fled on foot. The pursuit began in Westminster, when police were told that three armed men had robbed the Arby's Restaurant on West 70th Avenue and Federal Boulevard about 11 a.m.Police then spotted the suspects' vehicle in the area and pursued it onto Federal Boulevard. The vehicle sped away, leading police on a high-speed chase that followed an erratic path through Westminster and into Denver. At one point during the pursuit, the suspects' vehicle went the wrong way on streets, police said.
The high-speed pursuit ended in Denver when the suspects' vehicle crashed head-on into a gray Dodge minivan, driven by a Denver Public Works employee. The men jumped out of the vehicle and began running. Police caught up to one of the men and arrested him."He was apprehended really quick, right after the crash," said police spokesman Sonny Jackson. But police believed that one, or possibly two men, were still at large. The Auraria campus was placed on lockdown while SWAT officers with guns drawn searched the area for them."I was freaking out a little bit. I mean, they were putting us in lockdown, and there's armed people running around campus," said student Rachel Weiss."It was a little interesting to watch a couple of officers jump onto the RTD buses with weapons, searching everything," said student Derrick Bihr. The campus was released from lockdown before 2 p.m., but the second man still had not been found. He is described as black man in his 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 160 pounds. He was wearing a plain white T-shirt and blue and white basketball shorts and has short black hair. The man in custody and the woman driving the minivan were taken to Denver Health. Their conditions have not been released.Students or staff who see any type of suspicious activity are asked to call Auraria Campus police at 911 from a campus telephone or 303-556-5000.Speer Boulevard was closed southbound at Auraria Parkway during the lockdown.
