COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A 70-year-old Colorado Springs funeral home owner is in jail for allegedly bilking her clients. The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that Neva Nolan turned herself in at the lobby of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. She appeared in court Thursday, and bond was set at $50,000 with a hearing scheduled for Aug. 28. She did not comment during the hearing.
Nolan faces 90 criminal charges, including 25 theft counts, eight counts of abuse of a corpse, two counts of improperly selling pre-need contracts and 55 counts of theft from at-risk adults. She is the owner of the Nolan Funeral Home. She had been selling prepaid funerals, despite not having a license from the state to do so, according to Colorado Insurance Division.Under state law, funeral directors who sell advance contracts must have a license and must put the money in special trust accounts. Nolan apparently failed to do so.The division began investigating the funeral home early after receiving complaints from customers who allegedly tried to cancel the contracts but received no cooperation from the funeral home or Nolan.
