New Details Emerge About Jogging Priest

Former Sterling Police Chief Confirms Whipkey Appeared Nude At Summer Camp

There were new details published Tuesday in the case of a Catholic Priest accused of jogging in the nude.

The Rocky Mountain News reported additional information regarding a report last week on TheDenverChannel.com that the priest had allegedly appeared nude at a summer camp for Catholic boys in 1999.

The original report, from a parishioner at St. Anthony's Parish in Sterling, said that Father Robert Whipkey was naked in front of several boys but that no charges were ever filed. The parishioner said several families left the church as a result of the incident.

Sterling's former police chief confirmed the report Monday, according to the News.

Former police chief Larry Graham told the newspaper that the 1999 incident occurred at a summer camp and that his investigation revealed there had been no sexual contact between the priest and boys and that no laws had been broken.

Graham said there are no reports on the case because he never formally investigated it.

He is now an investigator with the Colorado Department of Corrections.

According to Graham, "He was shaving with his clothes off and some of the boys saw him."

"I asked people and assured myself that no crime had been committed," Graham told the Rocky Mountain News. "If I had heard something that could have led to criminal charges, I would have pursued it."

The Archdiocese of Denver issued a statement Friday that acknowledged it responded to concerns of inappropriate personal behavior when Whipkey was a pastor in Sterling in 1999. The statement said Whipkey underwent several years of therapy regarding his "personal issues."
