DENVER -- Governor Bill Ritter said Thursday that the Denver-area based PeaceJam festival is being considered for a Nobel Peace Prize. Ritter announced that six Nobel Prize laureates have nominated the group, founded by Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjiff."We are deeply humbled by this nomination," said Engle.
Suvanjieff added, "To be nominated by such an inspiring, humane and compassionate leader is an incredible honor, and we are very, very grateful." Ritter said he is proud that Colorado is the kind of place that can generate a group like PeaceJam, which brings young people together with Nobel Prize laureates and other leaders who seek to promote peace. Westword Magazine said Suvanijeff told them it is humbling to be acknowledged by the laureates."Ten years ago, I joined with many others in bringing before the United Nations a resolution proclaiming the period of 2001 to 2010 as the Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World." said Corrigan Maguire. "I have watched with growing interest as the PeaceJam Foundation has worked with tremendous passion and outstanding dedication toward achieving the lofty goals of this United Nations resolution."The winner of peace prize will be announced in October.PeaceJam’s goal is to tackle these issues with the leadership of 10 Nobel Peace Laureates in a worldwide campaign designed to inspire 1 billion 'Global Call to Action' projects by the year 2016. Starting ten years ago, PeaceJam has brought hundreds of thousands of young people to Denver and other areas to promote thousands of peace projects. Last year a dozen Nobel laureates attended. This year's event will be held Sept. 12 through 14 in San Jose, Costa Rica. The group operates in 30 countries.
