Van Arsdale Pleads Guilty To Misdemeanor Charges Of Child Abuse

BOULDER, Colo. -- A veteran officer with the Broomfield Police Department who shot a child in the eye with a Taser gun while he was off-duty pleaded guilty to a charge of child abuse, according to the Boulder Daily Camera.William A. "Skip" Van Arsdale, 42, said he was showing his stepdaughter how to test the Taser gun in their home when it discharged and struck her in the eye.The incident occurred last November, but he wasn't arrested until January.
Van Arsdale pleaded guilty Friday to two misdemeanor counts -- knowing and reckless child abuse resulting in bodily injury and prohibited use of a weapon, according to the newspaper.He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 28.Chief Tom Deland said that Van Arsdale is on restricted duty and is not allowed to carry a firearm or Taser.An internal investigation will be conducted to determine if police policy was violated in the incident.Van Ardsdale is a motorcycle officer who is well known in Broomfield for his role in organizing the Broomfield Santa Cops program that collects and distributes holiday gifts to area children in need, according to prosecutors.
