Arrest Made In Westminster Boy's Go-Cart Death

Suspected Hit, Run Driver Arrested In Steamboat Springs

Westminster police have made an arrest in the fatal go-cart crash that killed an 8-year-old boy last Saturday.

Police said the suspected hit-and-run driver was arrested outside Steamboat Springs, Colo., at 2 a.m. Friday. He is now in the Jefferson County Jail.

Police identified the man as Sean Christopher Daniels, 32. He is accused of failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to police.

His arrest came after Westminster police said they located a 1995 Chevrolet truck at 95th Place and Otis Street Thursday night. Police said the truck belongs to Daniels and evidence left at the crash scene matched the truck.

Quinton Von Duyke and his 10-year-old brother, Kaeden Von Duyke, were struck last Saturday evening while they were in their go-cart, going westbound at 96th Avenue near Pierce Street. Quinton died and Kaeden, who was driving, suffered minor injuries.

The driver who had struck them fled.

"It was a coward who left them -- two young boys -- on the roadside by themselves. Nothing but a coward," said a family friend.

"Someone made an awful, awful choice by leaving these boys on the side of the road," said the victims' cousin Pam Anderson.

Analyzing evidence left at the crash scene, investigators narrowed down the search for a 1994-2000 Chevrolet truck or sport utility vehicle. On Thursday, an officer spotted such a truck on Daniels' driveway.

Once investigators identified the suspicious truck, they were told that the truck's driver was camping at Steamboat Lake State Park, about 150 miles northwest of Denver. He was arrested without incident and brought back to Westminster early Friday morning. He was then booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

The news of the arrest came on the same day that Quinton was buried in Longmont.

"We will never be able to express how much we appreciate everything that has been done for this boy. We ask that you keep us in your prayers as we allow justice to take its course," said Anderson.

Police said the gasoline-powered go-cart was hit from behind as it was going down the street.

The boys were two of six children in the family who were staying with their grandparents while their parents were away on vacation, according to police.

Neither child was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Officers said it is not legal to ride go-carts on city streets. It is only legal to ride them on private property or in designated off-road areas.
