LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Two teenagers and a liquor store clerk have been charged for their alleged involvement in a crash that killed a 16-year-old Lakewood student and critically injured her friend, the Jefferson County district attorney announced Tuesday.Samara Stricklen and Seth Mutschler were in a car that was traveling on Alameda Parkway, near West Florida Drive, when a sport utility vehicle slammed into them on March 13. Stricklen was killed. Mutschler, who was driving, was critically injured but recovered.Four teenagers in the SUV were hurt but what was unclear was who was driving the car at the time of the crash.
The passengers in the SUV said that 16-year-old Alison Bowen was the driver. Police arrested Bowen, saying that they believe she was driving her parent's SUV when it swerved into Stricklen's car.But extensive police and grand jury investigations revealed that Bowen was not driving the SUV at the time of the crash, it was 17-year-old Nanette LaFleur, District Attorney Scott Storey said Tuesday.A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Lafleur as an adult on nine counts, including vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, vehicular assault while driving under the influence, reckless driving and possession of marijuana, according to Storey. She was 16 at the time of the crash.Bowen, who initially told police that she was behind the wheel, was charged as a juvenile with attempting to influence a public servant. She was also charged as an adult with driving under the influence, Storey said. Investigators believe that although Bowen was not driving at the time of the crash, she did drive drunk at some time during the night. That is why she is charged with driving under the influence."All indications after the accident, all indications pointed to Bowen as the driver. Obviously, the investigaiton didn't stop there and that is why we are where we are today," said Lakewood police Chief Ron Burns.Lakewood police said that they were about to file charges against Bowen when the evidence just didn't seem to be adding up. That was when the case was handed to the Jefferson County grand jury, which investigated and returned Tuesday's indictments. In addition, an employee of Alameda Square Discount Liquors was charged in connection with the case. Van Pham, 44, was charged with 10 counts of unlawfully providing alcohol to a minor, according to Storey.Jennifer Randle, a Green Mountain High School student, said that she saw all the students standing near the SUV after school that day. She said she walked over to their SUV to say hello and noticed that they had been drinking."I saw a 30-pack in the trunk. With that, I smelled the alcohol on their breaths. And I wish I would have done something," Randle said.A witness told 7NEWS earlier that the teen girl said she was behind the wheel at the time of the crash was actually in the back seat of the car 30 minutes before the crash occurred. The witness was not in the car when it crashed and said he couldn't say exactly who was driving at the time of the crash. When questioned about the conflicting stories, Lakewood police said they "have no doubt someone else may have been driving the SUV before the accident, but we have no doubt we have arrested the right person."The crash occurred a half-mile away from Green Mountain High School. Stricklen was a student there, but had transferred to Bear Creek High School earlier this school year. All the students in the other SUV are believed to be students at Bear Creek.
