DENVER -- A 3-month-old boy was left at a day-care center Wednesday evening, and is now the care of Arapahoe County Social Services, 7NEWS reported.
According to Denver police, a woman who identified herself as the baby's mother dropped the boy off at the A-2-Z Learning Center Wednesday at about 9 a.m.
But when the woman did not arrive at 6 p.m. to pick him up, workers at the day care on the 10000 block of East Dartmouth called police.
Neeru Jain, the center's director and owner, also called the phone numbers listed as the child's emergency contacts and talked to several members of the child's family, 7NEWS reported.
Every single relative told Jain that they would not pick up the child and told her to leave the baby in the care of social services.
Jain said that family members indicated that the mother had done something similar before.
"This is my first experience in all these years. And it's very disturbing. I could not overcome it. I could not sleep last night," Jain said.
Jain said that she offered to bring the family the child, but they would not accept her offer, saying that there was nobody there to care for him.
It was the mother's first time at the day care and the people at the facility did not know who the woman was, police said.
Police said they did not plan to file any charges against the mother, because the boy was in good health, and did not appear abused or neglected.
According to the Colorado "Safe Haven" law, enacted in 2000, a child who is less than three days old can be dropped off at a fire station or a hospital without risk of prosecution.
The first parents to take advantage of the abandoned baby law, as it is known, left their child at an Aurora hospital in December.
It is not known if this case will fall under the abandoned baby law.
The law was enacted after a child was left in the diaper section of a grocery store. It is meant to give mothers a safte recourse when they no longer wanted to care for a child.
