Sex Offender Accused Of Using Library Computer To Upload Porn

POSTED: 8:10 am MDT June 22, 2007

A registered sex offender was jailed on $10,000 bond after police said he returned to a library from which he had been banned and used a computer to upload child pornography.

William James Huffstutter, 34, was arrested earlier this month on suspicion that he used a Penrose Library computer to upload child porn to a Yahoo account last December.

Investigators went to the library Wednesday to search 27 Internet-capable computers for evidence Huffstutter or others had used the terminals to send or view child pornography.

Det. Clay Blackwell said nothing new was found.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tipped off Colorado Springs police that Yahoo had discovered child pornography on one of its servers, which had been posted from a library computer.

Police were able to link the suspect e-mail account to Huffstutter through a cell phone number that was listed with the account, Blackwell said.

A report obtained Wednesday also detailed library officials' suspicion that Huffstutter used a unique search engine last summer which displayed links to child pornography sites, Blackwell said.

Huffstutter was suspended in August from using any Pikes Peak library facilities for a year, library officials said.

Dee Vazquez, a library spokeswoman, said it is the library’s policy to report suspected crimes.

She said the library has suspended a handful of other people from the library or from using its computers for looking at sexual images, but Huffstutter’s case is the only one she is aware of that involves possibly illegal images.
