NEW CASTLE, Colo. -- A break in strong winds and a successful operation using fire to fight fire helped crews gain ground against an 1,240-acre wildfire in rugged western Colorado mountains.Friday night, firefighters said the fire was 100 percent contained and that all homeowners were allowed back to their homes.Residents are asked to remain cautious on the roads due to increased traffic caused by the remaining clean-up of brush and debris.
It's estimated $1.4 million was spent battling the fire.Earlier in the week, the wildfire forced the evacuation of 90 homes in steep brush and tree-covered terrain about 160 miles west of Denver. No structures had burned, although some were within a half-mile of the flames.
