UPDATED: 4:59 pm MDT June 19, 2007

A driver was charged Tuesday in last month's fatal skateboard crash that killed a Heritage High School student.

Colin McEuen, 18, was charged with a misdemeanor of careless driving resulting in death and permitting a person to cling to the exterior of a vehicle, a traffic offense.

The fatal crash happened May 17 on South Windermere Street in Littleton.

Investigators said 18-year-old John Nicolette was riding on a skateboard while hanging onto the outside of McEuen's moving Jeep. At some point, Nicolette lost control near Meadowbrook Road and fell off the skateboard, slamming into the Jeep.

He suffered severe head trauma and was later pronounced dead at Littleton Hospital.

It is not known if Nicolette was wearing a helmet.

Investigators said toxicology tests showed no signs of drugs or alcohol in McEuen's system at the time of the crash.
