Longmont Homeowner Goes To Court In Explosives Probe

Investigators Find Ammunition In Man's Home

A Longmont man accused of hoarding explosives in his home appeared in Boulder court Monday.

A Boulder County judge set a $50,000 bond for Ronald Swerlein, saying there was a major risk factor in the case.

In court, Swerlein's wife and friend told 7NEWS he is just a "nerdy engineer" who used the explosives for his model rocket hobby.

Police said they also found a stockpile of weapons and ammunition in his home on Monday as well as books about making homemade bombs.

Police said they are still sifting through all the evidence and said they are trying to decide what charges he could face.

"This investigation is still in its infancy. We're still trying to determine what his intent was," said Sgt. Tim Lewis of the Longmont Police Department. "That's why we applied and asked the judge to give us until Friday to file the charges."

Police do not believe Swerlein is connected to a series of small explosions outside the Longmont Clinic, but they said news of that investigation is what prompted neighbors to call in suspicious explosions at Swerlein's home last week.

Police said they found more than 200 blasting agents and highly flammable fuels and oxidizers in the home including lead azide, nitroglycerine, PETN and thermite. The nitroglycerine had to be detonated outside the home in a controlled explosion.
