FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. -- Federal Heights police officers rescued a dog from a hot car after someone noticed it the Water World parking lot.Police were able to get the dog out of the car and gave it water. Officers said the dog appeared to be OK, although they estimated it had been inside the steaming car for more than one hour.Police said they tried to contact the owners with the overhead PA system at Water World. The owners were cited with a summons to appear in court for animal cruelty.
The owners told police they thought they would be allowed to bring the dog inside Water World. But when they realized they couldn't, they left the dog in the car with the windows rolled down.Temperatures reached the upper 90s in most Denver metro areas.According to police, research shows that if it is 85 degrees outside -- with the windows of a parked car slightly open -- it can reach up to 102 degrees inside the car within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes the temperature can reach 120 degrees. At 110 degrees, pets are in danger of heat stroke.
