DENVER -- A 35-year-old woman is telling police she was pushed by her boyfriend from a moving car on U.S. Highway 6 just east of Tunnel 6 in Clear Creek Canyon, and he continued to drive off, sheriff's officials said.Officials said the man eventually returned and put the woman back in the car.Clear Creek County Sheriff's officials arrested 43-year-old Anthony Eugene Buffum after he was spotted and pulled over by law enforcement on Interstate 70 at mile marker 255. It is unknown if Buffum was taking the woman to a hospital.
The incident happened Wednesday around 7:15 p.m. Both Buffum and the woman are pointing fingers at each other in the case, each saying that the other was responsible for the woman's fall onto the highway. The woman, whose condition was unknown Thursday night, was taken to St. Anthony's Central Hospital in Denver. Officials said she did not have life-threatening injuries and suffered no broken bones.Buffum was charged with first-degree assault, false imprisonment and domestic violence.Lt. Rick Albers said the two had been in an intimate relationship for three months.Albers said it is not known at this time just how fast the car was moving, but Albers said the evidence was "consistent with being either pushed or falling from a moving vehicle at a pretty good rate of speed."Despite charges being filed, authorities are considering the possibility that the woman may have jumped from the car."There's always that question. But she says she was pushed," Albers said. "So that's what we have to follow up on.""This lady is lucky -- whether she was pushed or fell, that's still under investigation -- that there wasn't a car behind that ran her over. So, she's lucky," Albers added.
