LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- What’s left of the blue spray paint can still be seen on the Easter Seals Colorado Headquarters."We've washed it several times and it won't come off," Amy Kusek said in frustration. She’s the director of corporate relations at Easter Seals Colorado, and for months, she’s been worrying about vandals targeting their building.
The graffiti can be seen from the road, and lately, she says, things have gone from bad to worse."We've had a car stolen, we've had a stereo stolen and then recently someone siphoned the gas out of our handicap accessible van," she said. But she said Easter Seals was in luck. Their new corporate partner, Americstar Casino, knew a thing or two about surveillance. The casino donated six of its old security cameras, and Southern Cross Network Cabling wired up the $15,000 system.Easter Seals employees now take turns changing the tapes every 24 hours. If vandals come again, their every move will be caught on camera."Just having the cameras out there where people can see, I think is a huge deterrent to keep it from happening again," said Jason Beck, Easter Seals project coordinator.Perhaps more importantly it gives peace of mind, for people with disabilities who are already dealing with so much."We've got to protect ourselves and our clients and our building because we want to be here for a long time," said Kusek.
