Boulder High Students Speak Out About Sex, Drugs Panel

Students To Speak At School Board Meeting

Boulder High School students and parents will get a chance Tuesday night to speak out about the controversy surrounding a school assembly where sex and drugs were encouraged.

The Conference on World Affairs panel called STDs -- for sex, teens and drugs -- was held at Boulder High School on April 10, 2007. While the panel was designed to stimulate debate, some parents and students found it offensive and unnecessarily crude.

"I just think that the outrage of the community shows that people are very uncomfortable approaching their children with a topic like sex and drugs," said Boulder High School student Mansur Gidfar.

"I am going to encourage you to have sex and I'm going to encourage you to use drugs appropriately," said clinical psychologist Joel Becker at the conference.

Some students said the sound bites were taken out of context, adding that they found the panel to be informative.

"I'm not saying I don't think there were some controversial statements made, but overall I think it was a positive experience," Gidfar said.

"A -- we don't all believe the same things that the panelists do, and B -- it's a 90-minute panel. A lot of high school students' opinions aren't going to be made by what four strangers say," said Boulder High School student Jesse Lange.

Others complained that the panel was a one-sided discussion that discredited abstinence.

Gidfar, Lange and Garrell admitted that they thought the panel could have been more balanced.

"I don't think that would have been a bad thing to have it be more balanced," Gidfar said.

"It could have had a lot more balanced opinions. It could have had more people talking about abstinence or talking about how not to use drugs," said Boulder High School student Patrick Garrett.

Parents and students strongly objected to the content of the panel at a public meeting on May 8. They will get another chance to voice their opinions at Tuesday night's school board meeting at Boulder High School.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 18 students had signed up to speak at the school board meeting. They will each get two minutes to speak.
