Lake George Fire Contained

Early Start To Fire Season Expected

POSTED: 6:10 p.m. MST April 3, 2002

Firefighters on Wednesday fully contained a 250-acre blaze in Pike National Forest in Park County.

About 60 firefighters cut a fire break around the blaze Wednesday and set backfires to reduce the fire's fuel, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Terry McCann said.

The fire is located about five miles north of Lake George, Colo., west of Woodland Park.

Authorities said an abandoned campfire might have started the blaze.

Fire managers expect an early start to the wildfire season this year because of a drought. In the Durango area, fire officials warned property owners to be careful when setting fires because of wind and warm weather.

On Tuesday, a wildfire burned 60 acres and destroyed nine farm buildings west of Allison in southwestern Colorado. The fire was apparently started by a farmer burning fields. No one was injured.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs on Tuesday banned fires on trust lands on the Southern Ute Reservation.
