Haggard's Accuser Prepares For Book Tour

Mike Jones Not Visiting Colorado Springs

The man who said fallen evangelical leader Ted Haggard paid him for sex is preparing for his book tour.

But two big bookstore chains have left one city off his schedule: Colorado Springs.

Mike Jones made his allegations against Haggard last year, leading to Haggard's departure from New Life Church, the 14,000-member megachurch Haggard founded in Colorado Springs. Haggard publicly admitted to sexual immorality and also stepped down as president of the National Association of Evangelicals.

Jones, a former male prostitute, has written a book about what happened and about his supposed three-year sex-for-cash relationship with Haggard. Jone also said he saw Haggard use methamphetamine.

Borders and Barnes & Noble declined to schedule signings in Colorado Springs.

Barnes & Noble said it didn't feel there was enough community interest to support it.

A Borders spokeswoman said bringing Jones to Colorado Springs would have opened up a wound.

Colorado Springs is considered an evangelical center. Focus on the Family, a nationally known conservative Christian group, is also based in Colorado Springs.

Haggard has since moved to Phoenix. As part of his severance package from New Life Church, which will pay him through 2007, Haggard agreed not only to leave town but to refrain from discussing the scandal publicly.
