Boy Dies From Pool Accident That Claimed Sister

Yacob Gezaee Removed From Life Support Thursday

POSTED: 1:46 pm MDT May 31, 2007

A 10-year-old boy who had been on life support since he was found in an Aurora condo complex pool has died.

Yacob Gezaee was taken off life support Thursday at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where he had been since Monday.

Gezaee's 16-year-old sister, Bethlehem Gezaee, died Monday while apparently trying to rescue him from the pool.

A statement issued by the attending physician said, "Yacob died at 12:29 p.m. … after the family prayed at his bedside. All of the people; physicians, nurses, employees and staff at P/SL caring for Yacob and his family remain devastated by this tragic loss."

The siblings were found at the bottom of the north swimming pool at Raintree East condominium complex Monday afternoon. The pool, at in the 9900 block of East Evans Avenue in Aurora, had just opened for the season.

Investigators said Bethlehem had street clothes on and Yacob was wearing a swim suit, leading them to believe the girl jumped into the pool to help her brother.

Yakob was a student at Ponderosa Elementary School. Bethlehem was a student at Overland High School and a member of the soccer team.

Investigators said the children's mother and father were at work when the drowning occurred. Neighbors said the father works for United Airlines and that the mother works as a babysitter.

When 7NEWS asked an uncle how the family was doing earlier, he broke down, saying that "they'd only been here five months."

According to neighbors, the family had just moved to Aurora from Ethiopia.

The family said they will take their son and daughter home together for burial in Ethiopia.
